That's because a rare--and foul smelling plant--is expected to bloom."To call it a fragrance would be doing it a charity," says Professor Niklas.The tropical plant is expected to blossom within the next few weeks. And the University is prepping for its foul stench when it finally does."It will start smelling like a dumpster on a hot day in August," says Niklas. "It produces four different chemicals--some of which smells like human feces, others like rotting socks."The structure of the plant acts like a chimney, pushing the stench upwards and out.     The last time this particular plant grew at Cornell, it reached 76 inches. And while it has grown quite a bit in the past week, there's a new variable stunting its growth: its now outside.According to Niklas, a Corpse Flower has never been grown outside this far north. The change in environment is an experiment; Experts at Cornell wanted to see how, and even if, the plant could bloom in such conditions."The evening temperatures have been very cold," says Niklas. "[So] it hasn't reached the full size it could have reached, had it been grown in the [greenhouse.]"Right now, the plant--named Carolus--measures a little over 40 inches.     It's hard to know when exactly the Corpse Flower will bloom. However, when it does, it--and its stench-- will likely only last a few days before falling dormant once again. (WENY-TV)
